About Me: Tessa Hughes

I’ve loved animals from a young age, volunteering at rescue centres, working within veterinary practices, kennels and a rehabilitation clinic where I developed hands-on experience and a deep understanding of animal care and welfare. I gained practical veterinary skills over this time, that complement my physiotherapy work. This has strengthened my clinical expertise, deepened my knowledge of animal behaviour, health and welfare and enhanced my ability to collaborate within the multidisciplinary team.

I hold an MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy, a BSc in Applied Animal Science with Therapy, and a Level 3 certificate in Small Animal Hydrotherapy with advanced treadmill.

I am fully insured with Towergate Insurance and I am a registered member of The Institute of Registered Veterinary & Animal Practitioners (IRVAP). IRVAP accredits professionals in veterinary physiotherapy, ensuring that members maintain high standards of clinical expertise, professionalism, and ethical care-ensuring the highest standards of care for every animal I treat.

What is Veterinary Physiotherapy?

Veterinary Physiotherapy focuses on the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of animals to support mobility, reduce pain, and improve overall well-being. It involves a detailed clinical evaluation of each animal’s movement and function, followed by a tailored plan using techniques such as manual therapies, controlled exercises, and other modalities.

Veterinary physiotherapy supports recovery from injury or surgery, manages chronic conditions such as arthritis, and helps sporting, working, and performance animals maintain strength, flexibility, and comfort. While most commonly used for dogs, horses and cats, it can benefit many other species too, helping them stay active, comfortable, and happy.

What our clients say

Here's what my awesome clients have to say. I love helping pets feel their best!

Tessa has been treating our dog Mully, who has advanced elbow dysplasia, for about 6 months now and the difference she has made is incredible. Mully is a happy, active dog who loves to run but her condition was beginning to really impact her enjoyment of life. Now, with regular monthly visits from Tessa she has regained her mojo and is really enjoying her sprints on the beach and around the woods again. She is always excited to see Tessa, she loves the massage and laser treatment and is incredibly chilled afterwards. Highly recommend TJ Hughes Veterinary Physiotherapy

We have had Tess Hughes treating one of our dogs after he damaged his cruciate ligament in his leg, she has been brilliant and has a very good way with our dog, they quickly built a relationship and he is so happy when she comes to treat him. He has responded very well through various treatments and exercises set and is now back out and about. Would highly recommend the services she provides.

Tess is so calm, confident and knowledgeable with the horses, she has top of the range equipment including a laser tool which was great with the horses tight muscles and made a noticeable difference after one session. Couldn’t ask for a better horse physio, 100% recommend!

Tess has been amazing. She has given us extra time with our aging labradoodle Bean. Reliable, friendly and so knowledgeable, liasing with the vet to find the right treatment and support for Beans arthritis. If Bean could talk she would give her 5 stars plus! Highly recommend.
